Latest Education Trends in India for 2019-20

The impending Lok Sabha polls are likely to bring a huge change to the economy, mainly for the education sector.

It is expected that this year’s education trends will help India advance towards becoming a “knowledge economy”.

The importance of education in any society is undoubtedly far more than any other aspect of human life. This may be the reason that for the first time ever the World Development Report published by the World Bank in 2018 solely focused on education.

In the words of Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, “While education promotes employment, earnings, and health on an individual level, it drives long-term economic growth, reduces poverty, spurs innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion on the societal level.”

Not just on the global level, this report is extremely relevant to the Indian Education System as well, as it delves into systemic issues that impact education, and areas of future focus.

India is rapidly growing as a nation in the space of education, still, there are certain issues that need to be addressed to make education a fundamental aspect of the nation’s future growth agenda.

Below are four education trends for session 2019-20 that will lead India a step forward towards becoming the World’s Largest Knowledge Economy:

  • Growth of integrated learning solutions

It is pretty fascinating to see schools, largely in the urban areas, to eagerly adopt technology but still a huge number of schools are yet to experience the benefits of technological advancements due to connectivity and infrastructure issues, and hence they are still stuck with traditional ‘chalk and talk’ model of education.

India is in severe need of education solutions that associate with the nation’s socio-economic technological landscape. Integrated learning solutions that flawlessly create harmony between print books and digital learning seem to be a great fit in India’s current scenario of the education sector. We can expect the demand for digital learning solutions to surge significantly in the coming years.

It is near impossible for Indian schools to go through 100% digital information. Hence, digital infrastructure with textbooks as the learning base appears to be a more practical solution.

  • Adoption of formative assessment solutions

In the last few years, the nation has witnessed a lot of debates over the outcomes of learning methods. This has led to a huge demand for increased focus on assessment of learning and that too with the correct solution. At present, the traditional assessment approach tests the basic recalling abilities of the learners, which usually takes place during the end of the term.

Unlike them, formative assessment solutions are specifically curated to analyze social and personal skills and test the learners’ growth parallel to curriculum delivery, and therefore they are more appropriate to ensure that the learning makes an impact.

Formative assessments are also adaptive in order to give the learner a personalized feel of outcomes. Many learning institutions are now adopting formative assessment solutions.

  • Learning through regional languages

In a nation with a wide variety of languages, it is not feasible to provide the learning in one language alone. Since the beginning of the year, Google Translate has begun supporting seven Indian languages.

With the rising population of vernacular learners, the demand for regional language publishing also witnessed a surge which is not going to slow down soon.

Learning through regional language content will be a new education trend in the coming year, which will cover a wider learner base.

  • Increased demand for professional development of teachers

In the Indian education system, a teacher is a principal pivot in the learning curve. It is important to make teachers familiarized with 21st-century competencies, new teaching-learning culture, and improving their lateral thinking abilities through professional development programs.

Government initiatives like Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) have spurred interest in teacher training and it is expected that several more such offers for both public and private sector educators will appear in this year to help them be more proficient.

  • Last Words

In terms of education 2019 seems to be an interesting year, as it is expected that the above-mentioned trends will amplify the main focus on learning methods and how they can bring the education revolution. Also, this year seems to bring more efforts towards the overall personality development of the learners instead of just focusing on giving them the knowledge via books and the traditional teaching approach.
