Adapting to Multitask

Adapting to Multitask

Nowadays everybody is persisting to multitasking by juggling between studies, social media, and playtime. However, this multitasking often comes with a cost. Multitasking and divided attention affect our everyday experiences as well as our memory. We are often distracted, like when using a computer, most of us have several browsers or windows open together or while reading we tend to check our phones about every few minutes. Time and again these distractions make us lose our focus.

We are less able to judge the costs of multitasking because the cognitive resources that we need to make such judgments are already being used (to multitask!).

The problem isn’t multitasking. It’s about considering factors that decide whether or not to indulge in multitasking.

Learning and memory may be most affected when the distraction(s) require continuous attention. When multitasking demands more attention, memory is impaired. We must prioritize what to focus on. Developing an understanding of how distracting any distraction can be, will help us prioritize our tasks. Multi-tasking affects our memory and we tend to remember less.

To be or not to be distracted is always our choice. A few distractions would have no effect on our tasks and we would remember the higher-valued items. Our world is filled with alluring distractions, and we seem to adapt by being selectively focused. At times the distractions may prove entirely inconsequential; in other cases, we may still be able to compensate for them by pausing to address them or by prioritizing and focusing our attention on the most important information.

If any distraction arrives during a task, pause the primary task and the occasional interruption may not be as much of a concern. While multitasking, taking your attention away from your primary task without being able to pause it, will impair your ability to remember the primary information at a later time.

This said, distractions can be damaging, but with multitasking, we also learn how to focus.

At Dolphins High School, it is our utmost focus to develop such qualities in our students so that they can excel at every aspect of life and this is what makes us one of the Best High Schools in Jaipur.
